Virtual Dinner Party

Well, it seems the future is here. And not just any future, but that creepy, sci-fi future where everyone is talking to each other through computer monitors and television screens only.

The article above announces a new software website developed by Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam which allows you to converse with others via Skype. But that’s nothing new. What’s new here is that Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam have decided to attach each monitor to a “life-size doll” type of robot. These dolls come with facial-tracking software, so guests Skyping in can move and look around the room simply just by moving their head.

Before I get into the applications of this software, can I just say how bizarre the picture is here? Look at this man, all alone, hanging out with robotic dolls with computer monitor heads. Why is this man so isolated from the rest of the population? My head is filled with possibilities as to why this situation is occurring.

Now it’s obvious this technology would be great for enhancing the experience of a Skype conversation. This is especially useful for talking with loved ones who are far away, especially during the holidays (which is what I think may be depicted in the article). With Skype as we know it now, a person’s view is limited to where the computer’s camera is pointing. This gives the Skyper much more control, and much more freedom to immerse themselves in the room with the other person.
